slavement in any …vitude. Slaves were permitted to marry, own property, and in some cases even have their own slaves. It was an institution created as a means for the enslaved person to repay a debt to society and once satisfied, the captive was set free. This is not to minimize the atrocity of enslavement in any form, but only to put it in the proper context.
