This is what bothers me about so many of these portrayals.

…ut the slave trade are sometimes skewed and wrong — based on a white supremacist view of the world. By portraying Africans as subservient and accepting of their fate, they erase the identities and millions of stories of for example the successful slave rebellion in Haiti from 1791–1804, the mutiny of the Amistad in 1839, the well-planned, courageous escapes of many slaves, and the plight of many who made their way back to the shores of their beloved Africa.
